The Manual of Style is the outline that all "good" quality articles on the Hellsing Wiki should follow—that is, articles that cannot be classified as "stubs." Not all articles might be organized by these guidelines at present, but we will try our best to adhere to them! See it as just another way you can help us. All members must act in accordance to this guide when creating an article.

Content

As with most wikis, there are several types of articles that vary, and depending on the subject, the structure of the articles may differ. As the wiki grows, a certain subject on the series could be expanded (for example, from characters to weapons to locations).

Simplified Guidelines

• The Hellsing manga and the Hellsing Guidebook takes precedence over OVA or anime materials. As the OVA made enough substantial changes to differentiate itself from the manga—which is regarded as the definitive "canon"—OVA exclusive statements, scenes, or relations should be written in the trivia section or separated with the starting sentence, "In the OVA..."
• As long as they have enough substantial information regarding them, minor characters may receive their own pages; if they are named, then they must have their own page.
  • In general, if a subject (also including Hirano's old works) has ties—whether loosely or not—to Hellsing, then they can warrant an article of their own. Fan contents have no place in the Hellsing Wiki, even if they are noteworthy or popular in the space that extends to the wider fandom.
• Character articles should be written from the subject's perspective.
• References/citations is mandatory; likewise, articles should be written objectively and factually. Speculations, theorizing, or your own personal headcanons has no place in the Hellsing Wiki. Notes should also be used if warranted.
• Images must be used sparingly and should be added when it is necessary to show information or express certain points.
  • Prioritize quality over file size, only compress when it is necessary to do so.
  • Though PNG is preferred, do not worry about uploading/converting a JPG image.
  • Fan arts can be uploaded, as long as they are strictly and only used in your profile.
• Categories should be consistently structured.
  • If it is a character, Category:Characters must be set first—preceding any other categories.
• Do not use the Dracula novel as a source, or any of the Dracula adaptations.

Writing Style

• Use American English. This extends to punctuation; periods and commas should be included within the quote brackets, even if it is not a part of the quoted material.
  • Words in the quotes bracket should be in italics. Italics or bold should also be used to convey, express, or empathize with certain things. However, the period included within the bracket should not be in italics; the italics should be specifically put onto the word/sentence, not the period (e.g. "''Seras''.").
  • Hellsing (as in the series) should always be in italics. The Dawn should also be in italics. Media types such as anime, ova, and manga should not be in italics, only Hellsing should.
  • The "T" in "The"—as in "The Major," "The Captain," or "The Professor"—should be written in uppercase. The only exceptions to this are something like "the Vatican" or "the Werwolves." Essentially, the "T" on "the" should be written in capital letters if it is a name/title (The Major/The Queen), but if it is referring to a nickname, group, organization, or media (except for The Dawn), then it should be in lowercase if the subject is not used to start a sentence.
  • Romanized Japanese words containing "ō" or "ū" should be replaced with "o," "ou," and "oh." This is due to consistency (e.g., Why is Kohta Hirano spelled as it is and not Kōta Hirano? Why is Jōji Nakata spelled as it is and not like Jouji Nakata, just like Kohta Hirano? Why is Kohta the only exception to this?). This does not extend to the Nihongo template, however. Include ō, ū, and other letters similar when Romanizing with the Nihongo template.
• Events timeline on character articles should be written in the third person past tense. Other sections of the article should be in the third person present tense if the said character is not deceased.
  • Summary articles for chapters and episodes pages should be written in third person present tense.
• Articles should be written in an in-universe style; this includes calling characters by what they were called at this point in the story and not referring to the reader or viewer when talking about events.
• Articles should be independent of any point in the series; it should not be required that pages be updated every time a new event happens in the timeline simply because articles were written from the perspective of someone reading on the latest chapter.
  • If you use the word "current" anywhere in a phrase to refer to something, you likely wrote it the wrong way. Similarly, if "current" is used in an article, it was likely written incorrectly and should be fixed.
• Walls of text in articles should be avoided where possible. Shorter paragraphs are easier to read and are more concise for readers of the wiki. Articles containing walls of text should be fixed to ensure readability.

Translation Basis

The Wiki uses the official translation by Dark Horse Comics, preferably the second edition, which uses the Deluxe Edition translations; the character accents from Dark Horse releases will be written back to proper English for easier reading. This extends to character names, save from anime articles that will use the character names given to them by Pioneer. Likewise, anime characters should use the terminology translated by Pioneer.

Wikitext Style

• Things like [[alucard|alucard]] and [[Alucard|alucard]] are pointless, only [[Alucard]] should be used.
  • This also applies to links written to denote a plural: do not write the link as [[Alucard|Alucard's]]; instead use [[Alucard]]'s.
  • In the case of pages containing undesirable words (mainly brackets), it is appropriate to use alternative display text.
• Do not bypass redirects using things like [[Seras Victoria|Seras]] make use of the redirect properly with [[Seras]].
  • More information about why redirect bypass is bad can be found here: Wikipedia:Redirect#Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken
• The preferred form for headers is ==header title==: this makes it easier to distinguish when editing pages, rather than being part of the text.
• Do not use level 5 headings in articles, as they cannot be edited without editing the previous heading and cannot be distinguished as a heading at all.

Common improper style changes

• Do not go adding last names to links unless you have a valid reason to do so (full character name has not been used earlier in the article). Full names should not be abused to bypass redirects.
• Do not change page numbers in ref tags to have a leading zero. Going around the wiki and changing 3 to 03 despite most pages sticking to 3 does not improve the wiki at all and just adds pointless edits, just stick with 3.
• Do not replace words just because you do not know or understand their meaning. Such edits will be considered disruptive.
• Do not remove the space separating an articles' opening from the Infobox code.
