The Pope is a minor character that appears early on in the Hellsing series. He speaks with Enrico Maxwell. Unlike the radical elements of Iscariot (Vatican Section XIII), he is a sensible man and dispatched the Ninth Crusade with the express intention of protecting England against attack from the Millennium Organization, despite it being a Protestant country. Unfortunately, Enrico Maxwell would hijack the Crusade and turn their forces loose upon the English population in a massacre.

• Considering the time the show takes place, The Pope was likely Pope John Paul II who was Pope from 1978 to 2005. Pope John Paul II's personal history would also align with the Pope depicted in Hellsing having a great dislike for Nazis. During the years of World War 2, the future Pope lost most of his family as a young man, was forced to do hard labor after his homeland of Poland was invaded, and personally escorted and rescued a Jewish woman fleeing for her life to safety. One of the most popular Popes in recent history, John Paul II made numerous ventures to improve relations with other sects and religions; further aligning him with the Hellsing depiction.
