Incognito (インコグニート,, Inkogunīto)[a] is the main antagonist of the Hellsing anime series produced by Gonzo. He is voiced by Takumi Yamazaki in the Japanese sub and Isaac C. Singleton Jr. in the English dub.
An enigmatic figure with origins spanning from the Dark Continent,[b] he is one of the progenitors of the vampires that the Hellsing Organisation swore to fight against and the one responsible for the creation of the FREAK Chips that create false vampires. A man who lives for "total destruction," he seeks to unleash wrath upon England in collaboration with a "Judas" amongst the Round Table Council.
Appearance
An imposing and uncanny figure, Incognito was a lanky man with purplish-gray skin. Although his right eye was green, his left was abnormally large and red (and thus, stuck in a glaring position). The crown and left arm of his were also elongated. Upon activation of his dark arts, various purple tattoos formed on his body, notably the one on his forehead, which resembled a third eye. Golden piercings were placed at various points on his body, particularly one on his chin, four on his forehead (forming a triangle), and two on his gynecomastia. He also wore one earring on his left ear. He was seen sporting a thick gold necklace along with golden cuffs on both arms, as well as adorning a beige coat at times (having dressed in full formal attire when he first appeared in Great Britain).
Personality
A masochistic vampire hailing from the Ramanga tribe in Madagascar,[c] Incognito was a highly sadistic individual, perceiving himself to be born only to "destroy everything." His only reason for doing the things that he does was to hurt as many people as possible, and he displayed little to no guilt or shame for any of the horrible actions he or his allies committed, even going as far as to allow himself to be confined by humans for his own selfish purposes. By admission, he derived pleasure from inflicting and taking pain, exclaiming his wish for "eternal pain," and telling Integral to simply derive pleasure from the pain he is inflicting on her. Contrasting his sadistic side, however, was a calm-tempered man speaking in a manipulative tone, questioning Seras Victoria on her choices to become a servant vampire of Arucard's. He was a tyrant who acted not in a simplistic manner but according to his own definition of "logic."
Initially behaving with a calm, manipulative, and cunning attitude (being able to deceive and trick Integral Hellsing and defeat Arucard), once he absorbed Sett's power during a ritual atop the Tower of London, he became immensely egotistical and chaotic. Though he claimed to be loyal to his god, Incognito, in truth, had no intention of ever letting Sett take over and was instead plotting to betray the deity and usurp its powers for himself, revealing that he was incredibly ambitious and power-hungry, almost to the point of arrogance. His ambitions proved so great that they led to him murdering and absorbing Helena after he feared that she might cause problems for him in the future, suggesting that he might have had a paranoid side to him. Ironically, it was these character flaws that would lead to him being defeated and his plans thwarted before they even began.
Relationships
Allies
- "Master": The distributors of the FREAK Chip and the traitor amongst the Round Table Conference had partnered with Incognito and sent him down into the Straits of Dover, although Incognito had allowed himself to be kept under humans for his own purpose.
Enemies
- Arucard: Amused by Arucard's presence, Incognito had successfully deceived and outwitted both Arucard and Hellsing two times in his grand scheme of summoning and assimilating Sett into himself. The two are almost identical in nature, as both are intoxicated by the fact that they are stronger than anyone else and incredibly egotistical, while also serving under a human (for each in their own purposes), which Arucard remarks, "We are two originals who are kept by humans," in their first encounter within Bobhan Castle.
In his perceived utmost superiority after having previously defeated Arucard and assimilated Sett into himself, he took Arucard lightly when Level One was released; thus, Arucard took their battle into a cathedral after a grueling stalemate. Despite acknowledging Arucard's overwhelming power, Incognito came to this realization too late, as Arucard had assimilated Sett into himself and melted down a silver cross to forge a spear that pierced Incognito's abdomen. In his last moments, he asked for Arucard's true identity, to which Arucard complied for a split second before properly impaling Incognito atop the cathedral with the spear, entering his groin and exiting through the mouth; this makes Incognito the first opponent that Arucard never bothered to devour with himself or the Black Dog. Presumably, Arucard views Incognito as an opponent worthy enough to know his true identity.
Powers and Abilities

No!! It's still not enough, not enough. What is wrong? What is lacking? | |||||||

| Real Undead | |
|---|---|
| A Real Undead hailing from the Ramanga Tribe in Madagascar, the "Nobody" Incognito was the mastermind behind the creation of false vampires in collaboration with a traitor amongst the Round Table Conference, who had sent him to England in order to destroy the Hellsing Organisation. By devouring his foe, he could assimilate their essence into his own power, as well as the ability to regenerate from virtually any injury and demonstrate many unique abilities. | |

| Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: | |
| Superhuman Durability and Endurance: | |
| Immortality | |
| Incognito was biologically immortal: immune to disease and aging. Incognito had suffered all manner of injury to the most extreme degrees, only to reform himself. The seemingly only way to kill Incognito was to impale him through the heart with an object made out of silver. | |
| Dark Arts | |
| The glowing purple tattoo manifesting throughout his body indicated the activation of his "Dark Arts (術,, Jutsu)," allowing him access to a wide variety of abilities while also being a vessel for the deities he summoned from the other world. The extent of control he exercised over his dark arts was considerable, allowing him to incant and fill an entire room with his sigil, which could take on a physical form and act as a powerful offense. During this state, the glaring of his distorted left eye was essential for the activation of several of his abilities. | |
| Deity Summoning | |
| In addition to functioning as the activation of his dark arts, the tattoo also acted as a vessel for the deities he summoned. | |
| Sett: An Egyptian serpent deity revered as the god of deserts, storms, disorder, violence, and foreigners, Sett was the Messenger that Incognito summoned and assimilated into himself upon the completion of the summoning ritual, wherein he stained the Tower of London with the blood of the Hellsing Organisation soldiers before offering Integral's blood as a sacrifice. Sett possesses highly destructive prowess, leveling entire districts and creating massive craters as a result of explosions. Through the assimilation of Sett, Incognito managed to momentarily stalemate Level One Arucard, thereby forcing Arucard to shift the battle to a cathedral. |

Concept and Creation
Limitations surrounding the anime being aired on TV and the funding coming in from overseas made the production deem it impossible to depict "Nazis";[5] therefore, Incognito was created as a stand-in (despite having The Major and the rest of Millennium appearing in the teaser trailer for the show and the many implications surrounding the FREAK Chip[d]). He is conceptualized as a vampire whose descent stems from the "Ramanga tribe,"[6] Ramanga being ceremonial vampires in Madagascan folklore (specifically the Betsileo tribe), serving their purpose as boundaries men who serve nobles and are expected to consume things like nail clippings and blood spilled during certain treatments.[7][8]
Casting
Takumi Yamazaki was cast as Incognito in Japanese. Taliesin Jaffe decided to cast Isaac C. Singleton Jr. for the English dub of the series because he was "a good foil for Crispin Freeman," for sounding like he could "kick Crispin from here to highwater."[9]

Notes
- ↑ The meaning of his name is an anagram; he is a nobody, an enigmatic figure with origins unknown.
- ↑ An outdated term to describe Africa.
- ↑ In Madagascan folklore, the Ramanga is a living being that drinks the blood of nobles.
- ↑ The concept art for the FREAK Chip names it as "Millennium's Microchip (ミレニアムのマイクロチップ)."
