Paladin Alexander Andersong (聖堂騎士パラディンアレクサンド・アンデルセン,, Paradin Arekusando Anderusen) is a major antagonist in the Hellsing anime series produced by Gonzo. He is voiced by Nachi Nozawa in the Japanese sub and Steven Brand in the English dub.

An Iscariot specialist in the extermination of freaks, Alexander Andersong is an expert monster hunter and the rival of Arucard. Wielding Blessed Bayonets capable of slicing down freaks swiftly, Andersong's body is genetically modified to be a "Regenerator," a superhuman able to fight supernatural creatures with its regenerative capabilities that are comparable to vampires. His superhuman-like abilities, unyielding faith, and absolute will make Andersong someone to fear and admire.

Appearance

Alexander Andersong has short, spiky gold hair, green eyes, tanned skin, a defined square jaw, and light facial hair and is depicted with prominent, sharp canines. He also has a large, wedge-shaped scar on his left cheek. He is shown to be an imposing, middle-aged man, as well as lean with broad shoulders, and is quite tall, being slightly taller than or as tall as Arucard. He wears circular, wire-rimmed glasses, a large white cassock with purple trim, white pants, gray boots, a white shirt, white gloves, and a silver cross around his neck. On his gloves, there were inscriptions written across the crosses drawn on the back; the right hand said "Jesus Christ is in Heaven," while the left hand said "Speak with Dead."

Personality

Though usually a gentle priest with a kind expression, Alexander Andersong's countenance changes completely when facing heretics and monsters; as such, he is extremely determined to achieve his end of eradicating the world of monsters, usually by whatever means necessary, viewing his own transformation to a "Regenerator" as a driving force to carry out his own personal crusade. His words and his constant quoting of scripture indicate a clear, almost fanatical obedience towards "The Word of God," and, like Enrico Maxwell, he displayed an immense hatred for Protestants. Andersong's actions are vaguely relativist—he disregards his true mission and instead concentrates on the fundamental requirements of his crusade, thus attacking Seras Victoria and Arucard and killing Gareth Henderson of the Hellsing Organisation.

He was willing to ignore the fact that Hellsing and Iscariot had the same target solely because, in his eyes, any organization that is willingly associating itself with monsters is inherently monstrous; therefore, while his orders from Iscariot specified the extermination of a single rogue vampire, he engages in combat with Arucard as well because of his core fanatical beliefs. Consequently, Andersong is obsessed with exterminating Arucard, willing to go to extreme lengths in order to achieve that goal even if he was completely immobilized by the loss of his arms (which displays a sense of strong willpower that is present in Andersong).

Powers and Abilities

Regenerator
As the Ace of Iscariot, Alexander Andersong is the single greatest warrior the Vatican can bring to bear and the only known human being who can closely match Arucard's powers. As a Regenerator (再生者リジェネレーター), Andersong possessed extraordinary strength, speed, senses, balance, coordination, and stamina, far above what is considered normal for a human. Because of his abilities and religious beliefs, he was often involved in top-secret, solo missions within Iscariot, specializing in exorcism, suppression of paganism, and the extermination of heretics.
Abilities
Superhuman Strength: As a result of his transformation into a "Regenerator," Andersong gained remarkable strength, allowing him to vertically cut a train in half with his bayonets.
Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Andersong's reflexes are sufficient to allow him to react to bullets, although he prefers to take them head-on because of his regeneration capabilities.
Superhuman Durability and Endurance: Enhanced by his regeneration, Andersong is very durable. He effortlessly shrugged off shots from a dozen automatic rifles (none of which pierced through his flesh), while Arucard has often been ripped apart by such weaponry. He also took a shot from Arucard's 454 Casull point-blank, leaving a bullet lodged in his skull. Moreover, he sustained three more shots to the torso from the combined firepower of the 454 Casull and the Jackal, but he survived.
Superhuman Accuracy: Andersong could throw his bayonets with intensity and impossible levels of accuracy. In his first encounter with Arucard and Seras, he killed Gareth and incapacitated Seras with a bayonet at the center of her neck. Later, he hurled over three bayonets towards three Hellsing soldiers, striking them in the head and resulting in their deaths.

Indomitable Will: Fueled by his immense willpower and striving to reach the end of his personal crusade, Andersong, who had lost his arms to the Jackal, dashed forward and bit onto a bayonet on the floor towards Arucard, who observed in astonishment.

Pain Suppression: With his indomitable will, Andersong managed to disregard the severe pain stemming from his missing arms before sprinting towards Arucard.

Andersong's regeneration in effect

Andersong's regeneration in effect

Regeneration: Alexander Andersong is a "Regenerator," meaning that he is able to restore body parts that are lost and heal himself; this is demonstrated when Arucard's 454 Casull shot enters Andersong's head, but he recovers quickly and appears unscathed. A transformation that is the result of miraculous science and "faith," Andersong's body became very durable as a result of this; he is able to shrug off automatic gunfire and even Arucard's explosive silver bullets with ease. In spite of this, Andersong's healing factor was not without its limits; the Jackal's destructive power significantly impeded the regeneration process of Andersong's body, enabling Arucard to effectively disarm Andersong by shooting off both of his arms.
Bayonet Mastery: Andersong used scores of blessed bayonets. The blessed nature of the bayonets could sting vampires and negate their regeneration. He skillfully wielded the bayonets with great dexterity in close-quarters combat like swords and could also throw them with extreme accuracy (especially considering that he often throws the bayonets in large numbers, usually holding them between his fingers).
Bayonet Summoning: Andersong seemed to have a limitless supply of bayonets that he could pull from, suggesting that he benefited from Hammerspace.

Scripture Manipulation: Andersong had the ability to summon a horde of scripture pages and used them for a variety of purposes.
  • Ensnaring: Andersong used a set of scripture pages to entangle Arucard.
  • Holy Barriers: Andersong could affix scripture pages onto the walls of a building to erect a barrier to ward off vampires.
  • Transportation: Andersong could use scripture pages to seemingly teleport.

Concept and Creation

Toshiharu Murata, the character designer for Hellsing, recalled that Arucard and Alexander Andersong were the easiest characters to design, as the original art of the work had matched his vision of what the character would look like.[7] As for Andersong's height, the figures[b] are not necessarily based on his actual height but rather to convey the intimidating presence of Andersong (and the other characters).[5]

Casting

At the request of Kohta Hirano, Nachi Nozawa was cast as Alexander Andersong[5] (as written in the character explanations section in volume 1, where he fan-casted Nozawa as him[8]). However, the lackluster usage of Andersong in the TV series left Hirano feeling that Nozawa's casting was wasted in the anime after having watched the third episode, commenting, "Regarding Nachi Nozawa, what a shame. That's all. I was dumb to have my hopes up after having watched the first episode. No point in staying up late on a Wednesday now. I'll hurry up and play WAVE, then go to bed. How stupid."[9] Nozawa was replaced by Norio Wakamoto for the OVA due to concerns regarding Nozawa's health; Nozawa would later pass away in 2010.

For the English dub, Scottish actor Steven Brand was cast as Andersong. The voice director of the English dub, Taliesin Jaffe, researched to see if an actual "Father Alexander Anderson" existed to work with his accent, then found out that a Scottish "Father Alexander Anderson" did exist and worked on the "Eusebian Canons" (the papers for the Eusebian Canons were used by the production to work as Andersong's paper barrier in episode 3), so Brand was advised to voice Andersong with a Scottish accent.[10]
