Jack Seward (ジャック・セワード,, Jakku Sewādo) is a minor character in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. He is also one of the main characters in Dracula by Bram Stoker.
Appearance
Jack Seward had blue eyes, was a tall man, and had short, combed-to-the back, blond hair. He was shown to be wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt with a high collar and a tie under an oversized green overcoat with ruffles on the shoulder, similar to the kind of coat Abraham Van Helsing wore during the confrontation with Count Dracula. He also wore a pair of white gloves and matching green trousers and brown business shoes. He used a double-barreled shotgun as his weapon during the final fight.
Personality
Seward was inquisitive, always seeking to understand, based on his discussions with asylum patients. He was also loyal and kind, which was emphasized by the care and attention he gave Lucy Westenra after she began to exhibit symptoms of an unknown illness that they later recognized as the onset of vampirism. As a psychiatrist, Seward enjoyed using the most up-to-date equipment, including using a recording phonograph to record his interviews with his patients and his own notes. Though it pushed the limits of his beliefs, Seward remained dedicated to investigating Dracula.
History
Seward was the administrator of an insane asylum not far from Count Dracula's first English home, Carfax. Throughout the novel, Seward conducted ambitious interviews with one of his patients, R. M. Renfield, in order to better understand the nature of life-consuming psychosis, or, as he called it, zoophagous. One of the main contributions made by Dr. Seward was his recordings of the events depicted from his personal perspective as a doctor, allowing the reader to gain a scientific understanding of the behavior of vampirism through his behavioral analysis of Renfield.
He called in his mentor, Abraham Van Helsing, to help him with her illness, and he helped Seward to realize that Lucy had been bitten by a vampire and was doomed to become one herself. After she was officially destroyed and her soul could go to heaven, Seward was determined to destroy Dracula. He was present during the fierce fight between Van Helsing's men and the Count, and eventually, the Count was defeated and was seemingly finished off by Van Helsing.
