Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing (Japanese: インテグラル・ファルブルケ・ウィンゲーツ・ヘルシング卿, Hepburn: Integuraru Faruburuke Wingētsu Herushingu-kyō?; IPA: [inteɡɯɾaɾɯ ɸaɾɯbɯɾɯke ɯinɡeːtsɯ heɾɯɕiŋɡɯ]), often referred to simply as Integra Hellsing (インテグラ・ヘルシング, Integura Herushingu), is the current master of the Hellsing Agency, a secret agency working against vampires and other such supernatural forces running rampant beneath the public eye.
A noblewoman member of the Protestant Knights who is the head and last member of the Hellsing family, a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, Integra Hellsing runs the Hellsing Agency with charisma and patriotism, having served as the head of the agency since she was 12, when her father passed away as a result of an unknown illness.
A woman of iron with unshakeable will and pride in her humanity despite the circumstances against her, she is one of the few people who can stand up to the force of Alucard's personality and command his respect, not allowing her pride as the leader of the Hellsing Agency to be demeaned.
Character Data
Appearance
A woman of Dutch[22] and Indian[2] descent, Integra has sandy brown skin, blue eyes, and long golden blonde hair.[23][24][a] She has a tall, thin build, almost to the point of being lanky.[2] Thirty years later, after the Anglo-American Bioterrorism Incident, her left eye is injured to the point where she adopts a black eyepatch to cover it, which she wears under her glasses, and her hair has grayed.[25]
Integra's attire consists of a black blazer and dress pants, a white buttoned shirt, black shoes, and a cravat.[23][b][c] She also wears a pair of circular wire-rimmed glasses and is often seen sporting a beige trench coat when venturing outside Hellsing Headquarters.[30][31][29][d] Furthermore, she appears to keep a large revolver in a hidden holster beneath her blazer, supplementing it with a more overt Sig-Sauer P226 and a saber.[32] She has a fondness for smoking cigars, even in a combat situation.[33][3]
Personality
Search and Destroy! Servant!! I've given you your orders!! Nothing had changed!! Any forces which opposes us is to be crushed underfoot!! All obstacles are to be reduced to dust and ash!! (見敵必殺だ!!従僕!!私は命令を下したぞ!!何も変わらない!!我々に敵対するあらゆる勢力は叩いて潰せ!!全ての障害はただ進み押し潰し粉砕しろ!!) (Sāchiandodesutoroida!! Jūboku!! Watashi wa meirei o kudashita zo!! Nanimokawaranai!! When Alucard questions the validity of his given orders, Integra loses her temper and reiterates that his orders have not changed
A calm and collected individual, Integra approaches situations that would intimidate most individuals with controlled ease.[34][35][36] In most cases, even with genuine surprise and happiness, her reactions to stimuli remain subdued. She is very patriotic and incredibly loyal to the crown, demanding respect with her mere presence.[37] The precarious nature and danger of her role require her to be strong physically and mentally.[4] Thus, strength has become ingrained in her personality: she is a woman of iron with a strong mentality, willing to take up arms and make ruthless decisions on the front lines, serving as judge, jury, and executioner.[38][39][40][41] As an executioner, her duty requires her to make critical decisions to kill those who pose a threat to the United Kingdom, regardless of whether those targets are uninformed or once close allies.[42][43][39][40]
Suppression of emotions allows Integra to manage her job and others effectively, but it results in unrealistic perfectionism towards herself and those around her. She carries a heavy burden, placing excessive blame on herself for her failures.[44][4] She is prone to horror and melancholy, often processing trepidation when being pressured by Alucard.[42][42][43][45] Moreover, her temper can bring bouts of rage if her patience is tested,[42] and she can be flustered.[46] Despite her otherwise serious and intimidating presence exuding from her, she is capable of having humor herself.[34][35][6][47][25]
Though not as overt as Alucard, there is an intimidating and domineering air about her: even as a child, she could persuade Shelby M. Penwood when he hesitated;[48] as an adult, she convinced the Armed Priest Vanguard to comply with her whims.[49]
"Give up?" "Give up," you said. Of course, such fitting words for your kind. You who could not stand being human? Don't understand humanity, freaks. Come, I will fight you. (あきらめろ? あきらめろだと。 成程、おまえ達らしいいいぐさだ。人間でいる事に耐えられなかった、おまえたちのな。人間をなめるな、ばけものめ。来い、闘ってやる。) (Akiramero? Akiramero da to? Naruhodo, omaetachi-rashī īgusa da. —Integra Hellsing, to the Last Battalion brigade (Order 40: Final Fantasy (5))
Despite being surrounded and lessened by a troop of the Last Battalion, Integra stands her ground as a human and intends to fight back, even if the odds are against her
Integra's defining strength lies in her determination and pride in being human.[33] She believes humans hold an inherent superiority over monsters, viewing a monster's defeat as a necessary duty only humans can accomplish.[50][51] Despite the situation, she possesses the strength to persevere.[52][39][51]
Integra as a child was timid yet a very willful girl, being brought up with a commanding presence that even Alucard respects. When Alucard became her servant, she grew more confident and comfortable with her position as head of the Hellsing family and a Knight of the Round Table Council. Integra experiences a coming of age, gaining experience and losing her remaining innocence as events unfold and the war begins, shaping into a leader with an iron resolution who does not flinch at the first signs of danger and who gains wisdom through dire losses and betrayals.
Thirty years later, her personality seems to have relaxed some, but she can still be serious when the time calls for it, and age has not diminished her commanding presence. Although she appears to have grown a little insecure about her appearance, and her temper is also a bit quicker. She is motivated to train the new generation of the Round Table Council through hardships and intense training, eventually burdening them with the duty of the Hellsing family under the prominent belief that the era for a single family to be leading an entire agency has passed.[25]
Relationships
- Arthur Hellsing: Integra is entrusted by Arthur Hellsing, her late father, with the protection of England and the Protestant church before his untimely death.[53] When she finds Alucard in the dungeons, she mentions how she "imagined that there might [have been]... a knight who'd protect [her] from the bad guys";[54] considering Arthur was a knight of England, it could be implied that she was longing for someone like her father to protect her from harm. Although Arthur's life was cut short, Integra proudly honors his memory and his teachings as the leader of the Hellsing family, standing proudly as the last living descendant of the Hellsing lineage to honor his memory and preserve the legacy he left behind.
- Alucard: Integra and Alucard share a complex "master and slave" relationship.[3][45][e] Integra has been connected to Alucard since her father's death in 1989.[53] At times, she struggles to understand his true nature and finds his actions unsettling.[58] Despite this, she trusts him with her orders. In addition to being her slave, Alucard could accurately be described as Integra's weapon, and she as his wielder; he made it very clear to her how, although he could massacre her enemies without hesitation or regret, what kills is her intent.[42][43][39] Thus, she experiences trepidation which arouses Alucard.[42][45] Upon his return to London after his time aboard HMS Eagle, Alucard prostrates before Integra, who greets him with the title "Count." In turn, he refers to her as "Countess."[14]
As Alucard faces Alexander Anderson, Integra recalls her father's words on his deathbed, noting how vampires "look like terribly pitiful children who might simply break down and cry feebly" when Alucard cries after he subdues Anderson.[59][60] Seconds before his disappearance, she urgently orders him to remain, but he simply bids her farewell.[61] Subsequently, she was visibly devastated and angered.[62] However, she remains confident in his return.[50] Over the years, her faith in his return is quite shaken. When Alucard manifests in her bedroom, she sorrowfully tells him of her age. He replies with indifference, prompting her to bite her finger, drawing blood. While he is seated before her, she bit her ring finger, drawing blood, and let it fall into his mouth, welcoming him back as "Count"; in turn, he greets her as "Countess," telling her that he is home.[25]
- Seras Victoria: Integra is first outraged at Alucard's actions in turning Seras Victoria into a vampire,[63] then eventually comes to accept her within the Hellsing Agency. When Integra sees Seras losing control, she is horrified at the sight of Seras mercilessly slaughtering her colleague, quickly rushing to Seras, and embraces her, pleading for her to stop rather than demanding it of her.[64]Integra trusts Seras's self-control and judgment concerning her own life despite being a vampire; she commanded Seras to lick the blood from her cut finger. Seras hesitated initially but ultimately complied and felt better afterward.[65] This shows the trust Integra has in Seras, as Seras refrained from biting her even when offered pure virgin blood.[45] Seras stays with Integra during the thirty-year transitional period, where the two have grown even closer as companions.[25]
- Walter C. Dornez: For Integra, Walter had always been a dear friend and trustworthy father figure, serving as an advisor, protector, and occasionally emotional support.[66][67] Integra and Walter shared an interesting dynamic where they discussed various combat methods and other plans of action.[68][69] She clearly trusted him with her life, as he was often used as her bodyguard rather than Alucard or Seras.[70][71] Upon learning of his betrayal, she is devastated.[72] After an inner struggle, she orders Alucard to eliminate him, as any opposition to Hellsing must be swiftly dealt with; while she gives the order, she struggles to hold back tears.[43] Despite this, she is moved to sadness when he passes away.[73] When she notices how much she has aged over the past thirty years, her older appearance reminds her of Walter.[74]

—Arthur Hellsing, to Integra Hellsing (Order 02: Master of Monster)
Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing was born circa 1977 to a family of legendary vampire hunters. Her father, Arthur Hellsing, was the director of the Hellsing Agency, a secret agency working against monsters beneath the public eye. Integra has been sheltered and educated all her life to succeed her father as bureau director of the Hellsing Agency, as Arthur was distrustful of his younger brother, Richard Hellsing.[75] As she matured into her early teenage years, Arthur was bedridden due to an unknown illness. He tells her of a guardian located in the forgotten dungeons of the Hellsing Headquarters if the need ever arises and no other options are available.[53]
At 12, Integra succeeded Arthur as the head of the Hellsing family and director of the agency when her father succumbed to his illness.[1] Upon hearing of this, Hugh Irons, Arthur's close friend, warned Walter C. Dornez, the Hellsing family butler, to keep a close eye on Richard and Integra.[76] Three days later, her uncle, Richard, had locked down the headquarters and hunted her down to claim headship of the family, forcing her to hide in the vents of the mansion. With Walter unable to be located, Integra sought refuge in the dungeons of the mansion as her father told her.[77]
The ancient vampire begins servitude under Integra
Hoping to find a knight, she stumbled across an old, dried-out corpse instead. Richard found her, cornered her, and shot her in her shoulder, spilling her blood across the floor of the room. The corpse, who ended up being a vampire whom Arthur had imprisoned 20 years earlier, awoke and licked up Integra's blood. Rejuvenated, it proceeded to kill her persecutors, thus saving her. Richard desperately attempted to kill Integra one last time, but the vampire blocked his bullet. Picking up a gun, Integra shot and killed her uncle, becoming the last descendent of the Hellsing family. The vampire, whose name was Alucard, became her loyal servant.[78]
Director of the Hellsing Agency
"A girl like this." Seems a rather extreme way of putting it, Sir Penwood. (「こんな娘」、がとは。ずいぶんなおっしゃりようですね、ペンウッド卿。) ("Kon'na musume," ga to wa. Zuibun'na osshari yōdesu ne, Pen'uddo-kyō.)
—Arthur Hellsing, to Integra Hellsing (Order 02: Master of Monster)
Not long after, Integra was knighted and introduced to Shelby M. Penwood, a former friend of her father who told her to seek Penwood if she ever needed a favor. Upon seeing her for the first time, Penwood remarked she was far too young to fulfill her duty and expressed annoyance upon hearing of Arthur's words, though she stood her ground and would not let her father beat her when it came to asking for favors.[48] Over the years, Walter would assist her as a guardian and parental figure.
Capabilities and Arms
| Human |

| 人間 |
Integra's will to persevere is bound by her duty as a human, and it is her duty that drives her in continuing the Hellsing Agency's mission to defeat monsters, even in dire circumstances.[50][39][51] Her role as the director of the Hellsing Agency requires her to pass ruthless judgments, forcing her to possess the mental strength to carry out her duty to its fullest;[4] as such, she is intolerable towards failure. In accordance with her beliefs, she would command the execution even of those who blindly follow orders to fulfill her duty as a human, not allowing the duty imposed on her to be impeded. |
| Keen Intellect: Very intelligent, Integra was able to determine the route Huger and Jessica would take and who their next targets would be by following their patterns,[79] and she devised a strategy accordingly. She was also the first to correctly guess the meaning behind Jan Valentine's mysterious clue, "Millennium."[80] |
| Indomitable Will: Despite her talents, Integra is still fairly young and inexperienced as a leader and thus unable to grasp or deal with the full extent of The Major's plans. However, she makes up for that with her stern and unbendable will, not backing down no matter the hopelessness of the situation.[52][39][51] |
| Menacing Presence: Integra seems to have a very strong presence and charisma, being able to intimidate and scare Heinkel Wulf by ignoring her intimidation with a gun and convincing her, despite strong protest, to light her cigar.[49] Even as a teenager, she was able to intimidate Penwood.[49] |
| Superb Fencer: Integra is an exceptional fencer with quick reflexes, having successfully blocked an attack from Anderson and facing a direct assault from a Last Battalion soldier, beheading him as he jumped at her after a car crash.[81] Even with old age, she was able to keep up with the new generation of the Round Table members in fencing, even winning against Penwood III.[82] |
| Marksmanship: Her aim with a pistol is almost superhumanly accurate; precisely, she was able to shatter Anderson's holy bayonets with her pistol, even though Anderson was moving the bayonet to kill Seras.[83] Later, while on a moving vehicle, she shot down one of the vampirized Last Battalion soldiers.[84] |
| Control over Alucard |
| After Alucard pledges loyalty towards Integra, she gains absolute control over him, granting her the ability to order him to do her bidding as a servant of the Hellsing family.[85][86] Alucard can only release the full extent of his abilities, Level Zero, if she allows it.[87]

| The Hellsing Family Saber was passed down from generations to generations. In Integra's practiced hands, she uses it mercilessly against anyone who opposes her. During the final battle, She breaks the saber against the specially reinforced glass wall protecting The Major. She soon receives a new saber within the thirty-year transitional period.

| The SIG Sauer P226 is a semi-automatic pistol manufactured by SIG Sauer. While operating almost exactly the same as the SIG Sauer P220, the P226 is developed with higher capacity. Integra's P226 is loaded with "rounds tipped with blessed granulated silver" in order for it to be more effective against monsters. She has two P226s; one she gave away to Penwood so he could defend himself from Last Battalion members that would inevitably overrun the place, and one she kept until it ran out of ammo when trying to shatter the specialized glass wall made by The Professor to no avail.

| The Webley Mk VI is a revolver manufactured by RSAF Enfield. Introduced in 1915, it is the best-known model of the Webley revolvers. The Mk VI featured redesigned, more squared grips, a 6" barrel, and removable front sights. Irons handed Integra his Mk VI for her to end the misery of the Hellsing military officers who had turned into ghouls. Much later on, she uses a Mk VI in her final duel against The Major.

Concept and Creation

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kohta Hirano characterized Integra as someone who will take no chances and give no mercy in battle, and she is in no way a "hero" but an "anti-hero" or "dark hero."[41] However, he also created her with the intentions of her being "the most human-like" out of the entire cast.[88] Among all, he remarks her being one of his favorites for staying true to her personality.[89] In establishing the main dynamic of the show, Hirano paired Integra with Alucard while creating the character of Pip Vernedead for Seras.[90] As the main narrative centers on Alucard's desire to be defeated by a human, Hirano explained that, while The Major had defeated him, it was only temporarily because The Major could not be considered fully human and in Integra's eyes, he is a definitive monster, which is why The Major was defeated by Integra and Alucard returned.[91]
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Design Conception 2 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| When Hirano finalized the design for Integra and showed it to his friends, he received comments from them asking if the character was male or female and noting the close resemblance to Montana Max, the main antagonist of his previous work, Coyote and Angel Dust.[2][92] He notes that her toned skin suggests she may be of Indian descent.[2] Earlier chapters depicting Integra were noticeably more feminine, with curlier hair and more defined body structure, though her hair would gradually straighten over time and her body would become less defined.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Name Conception 3 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Integra is the main titular character of the series, as Hirano had decided on the title "Hellsing" to reflect her heritage and play on the word "Hell."[93] The name "インテグラ (Integura)" was derived from a tabletop role-playing game character named "セラス・インテグラ (Serasu Integura)" that Hirano's school seniors played.[94] As Japanese is a phonetic language (meaning that each character is intended to be pronounced), her full name is "インテグラル・ファルブルケ・ウィンゲーツ・ヘルシング (Integuraru Faruburuke Wingētsu Herushingu; lit. Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing)," with the less mouthful "インテグラ (Integura; lit. Integra)" being a nickname.[2][3] In Japanese, her title, which has often been translated to "Sir Hellsing" in official materials, is written as "ヘルシング卿 (Herushingu-kyō)."[3] "卿 (kyō)" is an archaic gender-neutral term referring to high-ranking nobles, and the correct appellation for knighted females within the British honors system is "Dame," but it is often translated as "Sir." In context, the first time the katakana form of "Sir Hellsing" appeared in the story is when Anderson derogatorily refers to Integra as "サー・インテグラルウィンゲーツ・ヘルシング (Sā Integuraru Wingētsu Herushingu)" in reference to her outwardly masculine outlook.[7] However, the usage of "Sir" would gradually become more common in supplementary materials for both Eastern and Western media releases of Hellsing, despite the more correct "Dame" or "Lady."[3][4] On chapter 12, "Dear Sir Hellsing" is written on Maxwell's letter. As such, given the usage of masculine titles in favor of the correct feminine ones for Integra, the gender-neutral "伯爵" would be translated into "Count" in specific Western releases. However, Japanese does not distinguish the masculine and feminine titles for "Count" (or "Earl") and "Countess." The only instances of any Japanese source recognizing either translation are purely merchandise, using "Countess" rather than the prevalent "Count" for Western releases.[95]

Trivia
- Integra normally smokes a fictional brand of cigars called "Hendi Winzermans small cigars." The name and the packaging design indicate that they are a play on the real cigar brand Henri Wintermans.

Hirano: Hellsing is an organization, which created a monster to destroy monsters, so in that sense, Hellsing is the biggest monster. As for Integra, I created her as the most human-like out of the entire cast of characters, so she's probably the least monster-like out of all of them. - ↑ Hellsing Official Guidebook (p. 171)
平野 インテグラですね。キャラがブレ ていない人物が好きなので、主要キャラ はだいたい全員好きですよ。少佐も。(Rough Translation: It's Integra. I appreciate characters like her who stay true to themselves, but I like pretty much all the main cast, including even The Major.) - ↑ Hellsing Official Guidebook (p. 170)
(Rough Translation: Yes, that flow of the story was something that was decided on from the beginning. Since the pairing of "Alucard & Seras" just wasn't a possibility, I wrote in Vernedead specifically to pair him with Seras. I pretty much had the pairings—"Alucard & Integra" and "Vernedead & Seras"—figured out by the time the story was about a third of the way through. That was a plot point that never wavered.) - ↑ Hellsing Official Guidebook (p. 160)
(Rough Translation: The main focal point of the story was that Alucard can only be defeated by a human. That’s the fundamental narrative: anything that is a monster is ultimately defeated by a human. As for The Major, while he claims to be human, from Integra's perspective, he is a monster. That is why he was defeated by Integra, who is a human. However, from Alucard's perspective, The Major is human, which is why he was temporarily defeated by him. But The Major could not be considered 100% human, which is why Alucard was not killed completely.) - ↑ Hellsing: Volume 1 (p. 180) — Afterword.
