D⑤ is the third chapter of Hellsing: Volume 5, and the overall thirtieth chapter of the Hellsing manga created by Kohta Hirano. It is the fifth part of D.
Summary
Rip Van Winkle continues her theatrics, shooting down helicopters sent on her way as Integra Hellsing is baffled by the incompetence of the military, which she dubs a "farce." She forcefully takes command of the operation and discusses a counterattack with Walter C. Dornez, much to the disappointment of the military and the acceptance of Shelby M. Penwood. In the corridors, they discuss a plan to get the SR-71 Blackbird in order to get Alucard on the carrier.
Synopsis
Beneath the explosion of the SAS helicopter unit, Rip Van Winkle continues her melody and parade, singing the second scene of "Der Freischütz" by Carl Maria von Weber, "Oh day of Terror!" Elsewhere, the military officers are baffled at the sight and the prospect of an entire SAS unit being shot down by one bullet from a musket; Integra, now having grown tired, describes the situation as a complete "farce," catching the attention of the officers, who demand respect. Integra stands up and slams the table, stating that she cannot continue their "little social," and as long as they prolong the escapade, then nothing changes and time will continue to bleed away.
She declares that the Hellsing Agency perceives the chain of events to be the work of a vampire, proclaiming jurisdiction; the officers reluctantly accept, but Integra asks Penwood for his piece. Penwood, desperate and hopeless, allows and recognizes Hellsing's prerogative. Integra and Walter C. Dornez head out to the corridors, discussing courses of action that would lead to an ultimately successful counterattack, describing the situation at hand to be of a "typical battle of threat and besiegement," recognizing the "Magic Bullet" to be dangerous, yet noticing that they cannot escape as they are surrounded by the oceans; Integra and Walter then debate over the methods to send Alucard or Seras Victoria into the carrier:
- Integra suggests a heavy warship; Walter disagrees, stating that it would take too much time.
- Walter suggests a small, high-speed boat. Integra argues that the carrier is equipped with large anti-aircraft cannons and a Close-in Weapon System cluster.
- Integra proposes an aircraft, prompting Walter to remind her of the surface-to-air missile.
- Walter proposes the use of an aircraft accompanied by a decoy, leading to Integra reminding him of the problematic "Magic Bullet."
Suddenly, Alucard appears from below, ruling out solutions that would not fare against the missiles and hail of bullets, as well as the "Magic Bullet." Integra states that those are an "unreasonable demand," but Walter informs them of a type of plane that would facilitate "such recklessness": the SR-71 Blackbird. Alucard will take the plane on a one-way ticket to the ship while three other fighter jets act as decoys via a missile bombardment. As they fly though, not only are the missiles shot down, but so are the three fighter jets. Despite this, Alucard's plane comes in at high enough speed, and Rip Van seems unable to destroy it with her bullet.
